Recreation Specialist – Seasonal (City of Amsterdam Parks Program)
Position Summary:
Recreation Specialist support the safe and enjoyable use of the City of Amsterdam’s public parks and recreation spaces. They assist with park activities and events, help direct patrons, promote voluntary compliance with park rules, and serve as the friendly and visible presence in our community parks throughout the summer. This seasonal role runs from July through August 24, 2025.
We are hiring 2 to 3 seasonal employees to collectively cover approximately 800 hours over a 7–8 week period @ $23.00/hr. Work hours are flexible and may be scheduled anytime between 10:30 AM and 9:00 PM, seven days a week. Schedules will be coordinated among the team to ensure full coverage during this time frame. This is a great opportunity for individuals seeking flexible, short-term employment over the summer.
Recreation Specialist are assigned to patrol designated areas such as playgrounds, athletic fields, picnic areas, walking trails, municipal pool and event zones. They respond to visitor questions, provide directions, offer information about ongoing programs, and assist with minor issues that arise during park operations or events.
Key Responsibilities:
• Monitor activity throughout the parks to ensure safety and accessibility.
• Explain and encourage compliance with park rules and usage guidelines.
• Respond to public inquiries and direct patrons to facilities or event locations.
• Note and report maintenance issues (broken swings, trash overflow,etc), safety hazards, vandalism, or suspicious behavior to appropriate authorities.
• Provide basic first aid or initiate emergency response if needed.
• Maintain daily logs and submit brief incident reports when applicable.
• Serve as a helpful and courteous presence representing the City’s parks department.
Operational Needs & Qualifications:
• Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Valid NYS Driver’s License required.
• Must be able to walk, stand, and work outdoors for extended periods in varied weather.
• Strong communication skills and a calm, community-friendly demeanor.
• Basic ability to operate radios, phones, or reporting devices.
• Vest provided and must be worn while on duty.
Uniforms and Conduct:
Uniforms (vest) will be provided and must be returned at the end of the season. Equipment is for official use only. Recreation Specialists are expected to uphold high standards of conduct, professionalism, and customer service.
